Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes) Tour
A cool, shaded nature walk through a green gorge of streams and wooden bridges, home to thousands of moths in summer.
The Valley of the Butterflies, known locally as Petaloudes, is one of the most refreshing places on Rhodes. Tucked into a lush green gorge in the west of the island, it is crossed by little streams, wooden footbridges and small waterfalls beneath a canopy of oriental sweetgum trees. We organise comfortable guided excursions with transport, so you can enjoy the walk without any planning stress.
Highlights
- Shaded nature trail through a green gorge
- Streams, wooden bridges and small waterfalls
- Thousands of Jersey tiger moths in summer
- Kalopetra monastery and viewpoint at the top
- Comfortable transport included
A gentle trail leads uphill alongside the water, past shady rest spots and viewpoints, up to the monastery of Kalopetra at the top of the valley. In summer, roughly from June to September, thousands of Jersey tiger moths (Panaxia quadripunctaria) gather on the tree trunks, drawn by the humidity and the scent of the resin. The excursion is often combined with a stop in a traditional village or with a visit to Lindos. Tell us your dates and we will recommend the right departure.
