When disturbed they reveal striking orange underwings — but clapping or making noise to startle them wastes their energy, so walk quietly and let them come to you.
Outside the butterfly season (October to May) the valley is still a beautiful shaded walk along wooden bridges and small waterfalls, though the moths will not be present.
Walking the valley trails
The path follows a stream uphill through dense canopy, crossing wooden footbridges and passing small cascades. The walk from the lower entrance to the top takes about 30–40 minutes at a gentle pace. The trail is mostly shaded, but the stone steps can be slippery — wear sturdy shoes rather than flip-flops.
At the top there is a small natural-history museum and a café with views over the surrounding pine forest. You can exit at the top and have transport meet you, or walk back down the same path.
How to get to the Valley of the Butterflies
Petaloudes is on the west coast of Rhodes, about 25 km from Rhodes Town. By car it takes around 30 minutes via the inland road. Public buses run from Rhodes Town in summer, but schedules are limited.
